Supplementary insuranceCountdown basic insurance
Your cancellation must arrive by 30.11.2026Countdown supplementary insurance (guideline)
Your cancellation must arrive by 30.09.2026Guideline — your actual deadline is stated in your contract's general terms and conditions (GTC).
When can you cancel?
The deadlines differ for basic and supplementary insurance — and depend on your model.
Basic insurance (OKP)
All insured persons
Standard model, free choice of doctor, lowest deductible (CHF 300 adults / CHF 0 children)
If your insurer raises premiums mid-year
Legal basis: Art. 7 KVG – Change of insurer (Fedlex) as well as FOPH – Premiums and costs, FAQ.
If November 30 falls on a weekend, your cancellation must reach your health insurance provider by the last working day before it at the latest. What always counts is the date of receipt at the health insurance provider — not the postmark.
You can cancel your basic insurance without having already taken out a new insurance policy — health insurance providers are legally required to accept you regardless of your state of health.
Supplementary insurance (VVG)
All supplementary insurance policies; for multi-year contracts, at the earliest from the third insurance year
In case of a premium increase, change of age bracket or loss of a group discount
Depending on the provider and product, other dates may apply
Legal basis: Art. 35a VVG – Ordinary termination (Fedlex). Supervision of supplementary insurance: FINMA – Supplementary health insurance (basic insurance, on the other hand, is supervised by the FOPH).
For practical reasons, outpatient and hospital supplementary insurance policies are often processed together, while dental insurance is usually handled separately. Here too, the date of receipt at the health insurance provider is what counts.
Only cancel your supplementary insurance once your new health insurance provider has already accepted you. Supplementary insurance involves a health check — your application can be rejected. This way you avoid being left without insurance coverage.
Tip: Compare offers by early September at the latest — for supplementary insurance you need to fill out a health declaration, which is reviewed and takes some time. The new policy often only arrives in October — if your premium is unchanged by then, you usually can no longer cancel.

How to cancel correctly
Special case
Extraordinary cancellation
Besides the ordinary dates, there are situations in which you can cancel earlier.Premium increase
Special right of cancellation under Art. 7 para. 2 KVG: the insurer must inform you at least 2 months in advance, and your cancellation must arrive by the last day of the month before the increase takes effect.
As a rule: cancellation by the end of November to cancel as of December 31. Depending on the insurer, other deadlines may also apply (until the end of the year or one month after notification) — see the GTC.
Moving to a higher age bracket
— (basic insurance has no age-bracket premiums)
Counts as a premium increase. Supplementary insurance has no uniform, legally regulated age brackets like basic insurance — each insurer sets its own tariff levels.
Loss of a group discount
—
Also counts as a premium increase, with the same deadline logic as above.
After a claim
—
Cancellation is possible if the insurer has paid out benefits for it. The deadline starts when you become aware that the benefits have been covered.
Moving house
—
If your insurer does not offer a corresponding supplementary insurance at your new place of residence, it will cancel the contract itself.
Legal basis: Art. 7 para. 2 KVG (basic insurance) and Art. 35b VVG (supplementary insurance), both on Fedlex.
If you have several supplementary insurance policies with the same insurer (e.g. outpatient and hospital), different rules often apply per product — with some insurers you can only cancel the product whose premium has changed.
Exceptions
When is cancellation not possible?
Unpaid premium invoices
If you have unpaid, reminded premiums or cost contributions outstanding as of December 31, you cannot switch insurers. For supplementary insurance, this is governed by the individual contract terms.
Missed deadline
Without a cancellation submitted on time, your insurance is automatically extended by another year.
Incomplete documents
For example, the exact product, the cancellation date or a signature is missing.
Missing proof of insurance
The switch only takes effect once your new insurer has confirmed seamless continued coverage (Art. 7 para. 5 KVG). For supplementary insurance there is no obligation to accept you — so here too, always wait for the new insurer's confirmation first.
If you are undergoing ongoing medical treatment, especially for serious illnesses, you are still allowed to cancel. But be aware that the continued payment of your treatment does not always go smoothly.

Then your basic insurance is automatically extended by another year. Switching is only possible again at the next ordinary cancellation date.
Yes, but keep in mind: supplementary insurance policies have their own, often different, cancellation deadlines and must be cancelled separately — independently of your basic insurance.

For basic insurance, not necessarily — acceptance is guaranteed by law. For supplementary insurance, you should definitely wait for the new insurer's confirmation of acceptance first, since a health check takes place here.
Then your existing supplementary insurance remains unchanged, as long as you have not cancelled it yourself. So: always take out the new policy first, and only cancel the old one afterwards.
