Prenatal registration

Insure your baby before it's born.

Register your child for health insurance during pregnancy – with no health questions and full cover from the very first minute. Even in the event of premature birth or complications.

Why now?

Three good reasons to register your baby before birth.

Basic health insurance accepts every child — no conditions. Supplemental insurance is a different story. Here, starting early really pays off.

No health declaration – with the right insurers

Some insurers offer selected supplementary insurance plans before birth without a health check. This means your baby is accepted without exclusions – regardless of how the birth goes. This is exactly where alletta helps: we know which insurer offers what and when.

Protection from the first minute

If your child is born prematurely or with health challenges, they are still fully insured – including under the supplementary insurance plans you have chosen.

Stress-free after childbirth

Registration is completed before your baby arrives. After the birth, you only need to provide the name and date of birth — more time for what really matters.

The two pillars

Basic and supplementary insurance – what's the difference?

Both are important, but they are regulated very differently. Basic insurance is mandatory and open to everyone. With supplementary insurance, the insurer decides – and timing makes all the difference.

Basic insurance

Mandatory

Mandatory for every child in Switzerland

  • Every insurer must accept your child – without exclusions, even in the case of congenital conditions.
  • Registration deadline: no later than 3 months after birth, retroactive to the date of birth
  • Covers doctor, medication, hospital (general ward), vaccinations and more.
  • Tip: Set the deductible to CHF 0 — children frequently need to visit the doctor.

Supplementary insurance

Optional

Early planning really pays off here.

  • There is no obligation to accept applicants – the insurer can reject your child or apply exclusions.
  • Registered prenatally: without health check
  • Covers services such as complementary medicine, extra hospital comfort, orthodontics, therapies and treatment abroad.
  • Not every product is available prenatally with every health insurance provider — especially with semi-private/private supplementary hospital packages, certain conditions sometimes apply.

Pregnancy & Birth

Which health insurance company pays for pregnancy and childbirth — the mother's or the baby's?

In a normal birth, the mother's health insurance covers the hospital stay for both mother and child. If your baby needs separate treatment, the baby's insurance covers it. And even after the birth, the mother's health insurance provides a lot of support — from midwives and breastfeeding support to postpartum recovery classes.

Why orthodontics is so important — and why now. Braces and jaw corrections can quickly cost between CHF 5,000 and CHF 15,000. If you only insure your child after birth, you must expect a health check — and risk having orthodontic services excluded by the insurer. Registering before birth and being accepted without a health check eliminates this risk. Orthodontic services are included in certain levels of outpatient supplemental insurance and dental insurance — but not in supplemental hospital insurance. The cards below show you for each insurer and level whether and to what extent orthodontic treatment can be covered prenatally without a health check.

And the rest of the family?

Your baby can be insured independently — the rest will follow later.

Many parents wonder if the whole family has to switch at the same time. The answer is no, it's done separately — and that's precisely what makes it easier.

Your baby: register anytime, protection from birth

As a new family member, your child has no existing insurance policy that would need to be cancelled. You can register your child with a health insurance company at any time — even before the birth. The insurance will then automatically begin on the day of birth, even with a different health insurance company than your own.

Parents & siblings: changeover on January 1st

For those already insured under basic and supplementary insurance plans, switching is only possible on January 1st (cancellation deadline: end of November). Pay attention to multi-year contracts for supplementary insurance. This is especially important for mothers planning further children: waiting periods of 9–12 months for maternity benefits are common — switching shortly before another pregnancy can therefore be disadvantageous.

Still questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

By when do I have to register my baby?

For basic insurance you have up to 3 months after the birth — coverage then applies retroactively from the day of birth. For supplementary insurance, registering before birth is worthwhile, because acceptance without a health check is usually only possible during pregnancy.

What happens during a premature birth?

If you registered your baby before the birth, it is fully covered from the first minute — even in the event of a premature birth or complications. This is exactly the biggest advantage of prenatal registration.

Can I take out the supplementary insurance only after the birth?

Yes, but then the health insurance company can require a health check and refuse or restrict benefits. Before the birth, many funds accept your baby without any check — this is precisely the advantage of registering early.

Can I take out supplementary hospital insurance for my baby before birth?

With many health insurance companies, yes — often without a health check. For semi-private/private packages, certain conditions sometimes apply. Our comparison shows which providers offer which levels prenatally.

Does my baby need to be insured with the same health insurance company as me?

No. Your baby can be insured completely independently of you — even with a different health insurance company. You can therefore choose the best offer for your child without switching yourself.

Who pays for the birth — my insurance or my baby's?

In a normal birth, the mother's health insurance covers the costs of the hospital stay for mother and child. If the baby needs its own medical treatment, the baby's insurance pays for it.
